How to paint a bathtub with a craquelure coating?

Moisture in the air causes the wood to swell, and when it dries, it returns to its original size. As a result of this swelling and compression, old, brittle oil-based paints crack and expose the surface underneath. It takes years for craquelure to appear naturally, but fortunately, you can achieve this look in a couple of days, not in a couple of decades. You can apply this finish to any wooden bathtub and turn an ordinary bathroom into a bathroom in the style of shabby chic.

1

Put masking tape on the walls around the dressing table to protect them. Spread a plastic cloth on the bathroom floor to protect it from paint droplets.

2

Remove the screws securing the door hinges to the vanity cabinet. This will free the doors from the cabinet.

3

Unscrew the hinge screws to remove the hinges from the dressing table doors. Set the hinges and screws aside. Remove the screws from any door hardware and set it aside.

4

Sand the surface of the vanity and vanity doors with 120 grit sandpaper. Wipe the surfaces with an oilcloth cloth to remove any sanding residue.

5

Apply wood putty to all small holes or potholes in the wood. You can use your finger to smooth out the putty and remove excess. Allow the putty to dry for the time specified by the manufacturer. Use 220 grit sandpaper to smooth out the dried putty. Wipe the area with an oilcloth cloth.

6

Paint the surface of the dressing table and doors with a shellac primer with white pigment using a 5-centimeter nylon brush. When applying the primer, use long, even strokes. Allow the primer to dry for the time indicated on the primer label.

7

Paint the dressing table doors and bedside table with a flat acrylic latex primer of your chosen color. To apply the base coat, use a 5-centimeter foam brush. After applying the craquelure product, the base layer will be under the top layer, so choose a base and top layer that complement each other.

8

Check the recommended drying time on the base coat label. After the base coat has dried, sand the surface of the dressing table and the doors with 220 grit sandpaper.

9

Wipe the doors and the surface of the vanity with an oilcloth cloth. Apply a second coat of base color and let it dry.

10

Cover the base layer with a craquelure agent for use with latex paints. Using a 5-centimeter foam brush, apply the craquelure evenly to the surface of the bathroom and doors; the thicker the craquelure, the more cracks there are. Allow the craquelure to dry for the time indicated on the product label.

11

Apply the top layer of acrylic latex "eggshell" with a clean 5 cm foam brush. Move the brush in only one direction. Do not move up and down or from side to side, as the paint will rise from the surface of the countertop. Leave the paint to dry overnight.

12

Attach the hinges and fittings to the dressing table doors. Hang the doors on the tub.

13

After the paint and the crackle have cured for 30 days, cover the surface of the dressing table with transparent water-based polyurethane to protect the crackle surface. To do this, remove the doors and fittings from the dressing table again and replace them after the polyurethane dries overnight.
